In Isaiah 17, we are told that in the last days, Damascus, the capital city of Syria, will be completely destroyed. Although we are not told how this will happen or by whom, Syria has become a hotbed of activity in the Middle East that those familiar with Bible Prophecy have been watching very closely.

The Israeli army says a Syrian anti-aircraft missile has missed its target and exploded near a nuclear facility in Dimona city in the country’s south, an attack was likely an accident. There were no immediate reports of any injuries or damage in the incident that triggered warning sirens in the area near the Dimona nuclear reactor. The Israeli military said the nuclear site was not hit by the blast.

An Israeli military spokesman said the Syrian missile had been fired at Israeli aircraft during an earlier strike and had overflown its target and reached the Dimona area.


The Israeli military said that in response to the launch, it attacked several missile batteries in Syria, including the one that fired the projectile that struck its territory.

Syria’s state news agency, said Syrian air defenses intercepted the Israeli attack that targeted areas in the Damascus suburbs early on Thursday. “Air defenses intercepted the rockets and downed most of them,” the agency said. However, four soldiers were injured in the attack and some material damage took place, it said.



This incident, marking the most serious violence between Israel and Syria so far, indeed points to a likely Iranian involvement. Iran, which maintains troops and proxies in Syria and has accused Israel of a series of attacks on its nuclear facilities, including sabotage at its Natanz nuclear facility that happened on April 11 have vowed revenge.

We are justified in thinking these things because of Jesus’ prophetic words. “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains” (Matthew 24:7-8).


But how close is the end of the world, really? Closer than you might think. It's important to understand that we have been living in the last days for centuries now. If we’ve technically been in the last days for the past 2000 years of human history, why has God tarried so long? Understand, when God is warning judgment not just on a nation but on an entire planet and species, it makes sense that God would allow mankind ample time to repent and change our ways, even if that is thousands of years.


These are the events to consider as End Time prophecy: “You will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death. (Matthew 24:9). First, nearly 90,000 Christians were killed for their faith as far back as 2016 and as many as 600 million were prevented from practicing their faith through intimidation, forced conversions, bodily harm or even death.” The imprisonment, torture and even death of Christians continues to rise throughout the world at record levels even more in the past five years.


Second: “You will be hated by all nations because of me” (Matthew 24:9). We can look at evidence of rising hatred in two of the areas of the world where Christianity once dominated: America and Europe. For centuries these two centers of human civilization were the breadbasket of the Christian religion. Laws and regulations are stripping back Christian influences in places where we once flourished. Christianity is not celebrated anymore in many nations; rather it is suppressed.


Third: “At that time many will turn away from the faith” (Matthew 24:10). Pew Research recently reported on the rapid rise of the “nones,” those in America who self-identify as not being affiliated with any religion or denomination. What is a most alarming trend is that the majority of ‘nones’ are in the younger generations, meaning that American Christians are failing to passing on their faith to their children.


Fourth: “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold” (Matthew 24:12). Look at where our morals are as a nation. Look at our views on ethics, morality, and sexuality. We’re living in a new moral age, one that is increasingly wicked. Because of that, the love even of Christians has grown cold.


The final sign Jesus gave: “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14). In spite of rising persecution, Christianity is proving resilient as Jesus continues to build His church (Matthew 16:18). Missionaries are being sent out from nations far and wide to provide a witness to all nations and all peoples. There are only a handful of peoples who haven’t heard the message, and the gap is narrowing quickly.
