If I Were The Devil in America
Paul Harvey https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Harvey was one of the most famous radio personalities of the 20th century. He first went on the air in 1933, and with shows like The Rest of the Story he was a staple of America radio for decades.
He was also a devout Christian https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Harvey#Personal_Tastes who was deeply concerned that the United States was abandoning God and morality at her own peril.
He expressed this in a most powerful way with his radio essay “If I Were the Devil.”
First published in 1964 but revised slightly over the years, the essay warns against attacks on the credibility of the Bible, marriage, and family, and the promotion of pornography, socialism, and gambling, among other things.
“In other words,” he concludes at the end, “if I were the devil, I’d just keep right on doing what he’s doing.” His point is that American culture is already promoting these evil things.
His essay is prescient because many of the very things Harvey was worried about in the 1960s have gotten much worse, to the great detriment to souls and America.
If I Were The devil
If I were the prince of darkness, I would want to engulf the whole world in darkness. (Image Barack Obama as bathema)
I’d have a third of its real estate and four-fifths of its population, but I wouldn't be happy until I had seized the ripest apple on the tree — thee. (Nancy Pelosi's home, Maxine Water's home, Vatican, Caitlin Jennings, Kardashian's, Rothschilds, Soros)
So, I would set about however necessary to take over the United States.
I’d subvert the churches first, and I would begin with a campaign of whispers. (Corrupt Ministers)
With the wisdom of a serpent, I would whisper to you as I whispered to Eve, “Do as you please.” (Women's March)
To the young I would whisper “The Bible is a myth.” I would convince them that “man created God,” instead of the other way around. I would confide that “what is bad is good and what is good is square.” (Pro-Abortions, AI, Stormy Daniels)
And the old, I would teach to pray after me, “Our Father, which are in Washington …” (Al Sharpton, Hillary Clinton, Bush's, Obama)
Then I’d get organized. (Antifa pre-rally)
I’d educate authors in how to make lurid literature exciting so that anything else would appear dull, uninteresting.
I’d threaten TV with dirtier movies, and vice-versa. (Lady Gaga, Molly Cyrus, 50 Shades of Gray, Eyes Wide Shut, ...)
I’d peddle narcotics to whom I could. I’d sell alcohol to ladies and gentlemen of distinction. I’d tranquilize the rest with pills.
(Meth Addicts, Opium Addicts, and funerals)
If I were the devil, I’d soon have families at war with themselves, churches at war with themselves and nations at war with themselves until each, in its turn, was consumed. (Children who have murdered parents, and Waco, Ferguson)
And with promises of higher ratings, I’d have mesmerizing media fanning the flames. (CNN, MSNBC, FAKE NEWS)
If I were the devil, I would encourage schools to refine young intellects but neglect to discipline emotions. Just let those run wild until before you knew it, you’d have drug-sniffing dogs and metal detectors at every schoolhouse door. (Professors inciting violence, NY Inner-city public schools, Drugs and Violence in Public Schools)
Within a decade, I’d have prisons overflowing. I'd have judges promoting pornography. Soon, I could evict God from the courthouse and the schoolhouse and then from the houses of Congress. (Prison Riots, Judges involved in sex trafficking)
In his own churches, I would substitute psychology for religion and deify science. I’d lure priests and pastors into misusing boys and girls and church money. (Science vs Religion, Psychology symbol, Catholic pedophiles)
If I were the devil, I'd make the symbol of Easter an egg and the symbol of Christmas, a bundle.
If I were the devil, I’d take from those who have and give to those who wanted until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious. What’ll you bet I couldn’t get whole states to promote gambling as the way to get rich? (Gambling)
I would caution against extremes and hard work and patriotism, and moral conduct.
I’d convince the young that marriage is old-fashioned, that swinging is more fun and that what you see on television is the way to be.
And thus, I could undress you in public and I could lure you into bed with diseases for which there is no cure.
In other words, if I were the devil, I’d just keep right on doing what he’s doing.
"For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known."
– Corinthians 13:4-13
"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints."
– Ephesians 6:10-18
